Root canal treatment falls beneath the umbrella of endodontics and involves the removal of inflamed or infected pulp from deep within the core of the tooth. Once the infected material has been removed, the canal is carefully cleaned, disinfected, sealed and filled. The treatment removes bacteria from the infected canal, prevents reinfection, and saves the tooth from extraction. Often, if the tooth is left weakened, it will be capped with a crown at a later date to preserve its integrity and restore aesthetics. Root canal treatment generally requires one to two dental visits.
