There are a couple of dental materials we use for our fillings and a few terms to understand:
• Amalgam – This is the metallic silver-coloured filling that has been around for decades. It’s the most affordable option, and because of its strength, it works well on teeth that have to withstand a lot of chewing pressure, like molars. The only downsides of this type of filling are its colour and the presence of metal in the mouth.
• Composite – This is the most popular material for dental fillings in Barrow-in-Furness due to its natural toothlike colour and seamless integration into the smile. While it’s a more expensive option, patients may feel it’s worth it for a flawless smile.
• Inlays and onlays – Sometimes cavities become too big to fill with normal fillings and in these cases, we use what is referred to as indirect fillings since they are fabricated at a laboratory before being fitted. Inlays fill the inside of a tooth whereas onlays are designed to partially fit over the tooth and replicate its original shape.
